The Real Debate: Ed Gillespie Vs. Other Republicans

Some Republicans have standards for leadership. Ed Gillespie does not.

Ahead of the second gubernatorial debate of the general election, the Northam for Governor campaign released a new video highlighting Ed Gillespie’s evasion tactics: refusing to answer difficult questions by crying “federal issue” and disappearing into the background when it’s time to call out Donald Trump. Yet, Gillespie’s former boss Bob McDonnell believes that the governor of Virginia has a very different role as chief executive of the commonwealth.

Ed Gillespie has resoundingly refused to state his position on Trumpcare, saying it’s a “federal issue,” and has failed to call out Trump’s tacit support of white supremacists in Charlottesville.

Former Governor Bob McDonnell in 2009 said, “A governor needs to take a stand and say if it’s wrong for Virginia, we’ll oppose it.”

The video comes just before the candidates face off in the second debate of the general election Tuesday evening in Northern Virginia. NBC’s Chuck Todd will moderate the debate.
